Getting to Stone Lab

Stone Lab is located on South Bass Island, accessible by ferry only. Click the maps below for more details.

If you are planning to fly from out of state, you have several airport options – Cleveland, Toledo or Detroit. From there, you can rent a car (recommended) or take an Amtrak train or Greyhound bus to a ferry station, where you will travel by boat to South Bass Island.

Public Transportation

It may be possible to take an Amtrak train or Greyhound bus to Sandusky, Ohio, where there is a Jet Express Ferry dock.

Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses run from Cleveland, Detroit and Toldeo to Sandusky. However none of these options have stations at or near the airports, so you would need to take a taxi or arrange a ride from the airport to the station and also from the Sandusky station to the ferry dock. In addition, the bus and train schedules are extremely limited. Check the Amtrak and Greyhound websites for more details.

Ferries

Two ferry services make frequent trips to and from the island. Please call or visit their websites for dock locations, hours, and transportation cost.

Miller Ferry

Miller Ferry transports cars in addition to passengers. Please visit their website for special notes regarding car transportation. Miller Ferry docks at the southern tip of South Bass Island – visitors without cars can use the Island Transportation Company (419) 285-4855 to be transported to the Stone Lab office.

If you’re driving from the Miller Ferry dock, take Langram Road to Toledo Avenue, make a left on Toledo Avenue, and another left on Bayview Avenue, which turns into Bayview Drive.

Parking is free in the Miller Ferry parking lot. Ferry service is $ 14 roundtrip. Miller has a full schedule of departure times with ferry boats running regularly.

Please note that the ferry stays on a tight schedule and will not wait for passengers.

Jet Express

Jet Express is a passenger ferry and docks directly at the Put-in-Bay Marina, an easy 10-minute walk from the Stone Lab office. From the dock, take a right on Bayview Drive and follow it to 878 Bayview Drive.

Ferry service is $ 39.50 round trip. Parking on Jackson Street Pier is available for $ 5 per night. The Jet Express has limited departure times (approx. every 1-2 hours) beginning at 9 a.m.

Please note that the ferry stays on a tight schedule and will not wait for passengers.
