Scholarships Help Students Experience Science at Ohio State University’s Stone Lab this Summer

Gibraltar Island, OH Students and educators who want to earn science credit this summer at Stone Laboratory, Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, can apply for tuition assistance through the Stone Lab Scholarship program. College students and educators must submit their scholarship applications by Tuesday, March 13. The deadline for high school applications is Monday, March 19.

Scholarship amounts vary depending on applicants’ need and academic merit; 60 students and educators received awards last summer ranging from $100 to $1,500 per student. Classes last one or five weeks and are open to students any school or university, and course credit is often transferable to other colleges and universities.

College students taking a five-week class can also work at Stone Lab to cover their room and board. Available positions include Biological Field Station Assistant, Laboratory and Library/Bookstore Assistant, and there is a Hospitality Internship. Stone Lab offers science classes in a number of science topics, ranging from ecology and evolution to herpetology and spider biology. Introductory and advanced classes allow students from high school to graduate students to find something to suit their needs. Educators are welcome to apply for any of the classes offered, as well as for specific educator courses that focus on teaching Great Lakes science to their students. Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State University’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the education and research facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
