Event to include Public Webinar and On-Water Field Demonstrations for Media Representatives

GIBRALTAR ISLAND — After a successful event last year, Ohio Sea Grant’s Stone Laboratory will again host a media briefing on July 2, 2013 to explain NOAA’s second seasonal harmful algal bloom (HAB) forecast in the Great Lakes.  The presentation, led by regional and national experts, will feature an on-the-water field experience and expert commentary, as well as a brief overview of the history of this work on Lake Erie. A webinar in the afternoon will allow the public to participate remotely.

The media briefing and field experience will begin on Tuesday, July 2, at 10:00 a.m. ET, at Ohio State University’s Stone Lab at Put-in-Bay, Ohio. For media registration, please contact Jill Jentes Banicki, Ohio Sea Grant, at jentes.1@osu.edu, or 614-937-0072. Lunch will be provided for registered participants.

The public webinar will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. ET on July 2. Registration information is available on the Ohio Sea Grant website. The webinar is free, but registration is required to receive log-in information.

Invited speakers and guests include representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, U.S. Senator Rob Portman, and U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur; Scott Nally, Director of the Ohio EPA; Dr. Jeff Reutter, Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory Director and the event host; Dr. Rick Stumpf, NOAA HAB model and forecast expert from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS); Dr. Mark Monaco, Director of NOAA’s Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment at NCCOS; Dr. Pete Richards, Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Water Quality Research at Heidelberg University; and Dr. Justin Chaffin, Stone Lab’s Research Coordinator and an algae and nutrient expert.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is the Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie and the education and research facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program.
