Ohio Sea Grant Hosts An Evening with Stone Lab to Benefit Ohio State’s Island Campus

3:55 pm, Tue January 31, 2017 – Join Stone Lab staff and alumni for an evening of learning and scholarship support

Columbus Ohio Sea Grant and the Friends of Stone Laboratory (FOSL) will be hosting the 19th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. February 7, 2017, at The Ohio State University’s Longaberger Alumni House (2200 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio). Learn about Stone Lab and Ohio Sea Grant, meet former students, and bid in the silent auction to support scholarships for future Stone Lab summer sessions! High school and college students can also win a Stone Lab scholarship covering room and board for a one-week course.

This year’s featured speaker is Bryan D. Mark, Ohio’s state climatologist and professor of geography at Ohio State. In addition, Caroline McElwain, a student in Stone Lab’s 2016 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Scholarship Program will talk about her experience studying how Lake Erie fish see underwater.

Stone Lab staff, faculty members and former students will be available to answer questions from interested students, parents, and educators.

Items available in the Silent Auction include tickets to cultural activities and sporting events, books, meals at fine-dining establishments, items for the home and family, and much more. Credit cards will be accepted for auction items and Stone Lab merchandise, along with cash and checks, and all proceeds will benefit Stone Lab’s programs and scholarships.

The event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are requested via go.osu.edu/SLevening. Parking is free, but requires a parking pass downloadable at the event website. A cash bar, supported in part by Land-Grant Brewing Company, will also be available, along with free soft drinks and snacks. Music will be provided by Columbus-based Flute Cocktail.

The Winter Program is sponsored by FOSL and supported in part by the John H. Dunlap, Jr. Fund for Education, Outreach, and Development at Stone Laboratory. FOSL is a non-profit support group that donates time and money to assist with the planning and funding of the Laboratory. Since its creation in 1981, FOSL has raised more than $1 million in endowments; bought equipment like microscopes, computers, row boats, and sampling equipment to update the lab; supported scholarships for over 500 students; and funded research assistants and visiting professors.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. The Ohio State University’s Ohio Sea Grant Program is part of NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 33 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources.
