Guest Lecture Series at Stone Lab Kicks Off with “Careers in the Green Industry” on June 14

11:28 am, Tue June 12, 2018 – This year's guest lecture program runs June 14 through August 2

Gibraltar Island Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, are hosting the 2018 Stone Lab Guest Lecture Series from June 14 through August 2, 2018. The lecture series features speakers from Ohio universities, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies and private consulting firms, all covering topics related to the Lake Erie environment.

The June 14 lecture features Brent Repenning and Mark Noark of The Davey Tree Expert Company, who will introduce students and other attendees to careers in the green industry, and Jason Cervenec of Ohio State’s Byrd Polar & Climate Research Center, who will present “We All Have A Role to Play in Climate Change Education.”

Each evening will start with a research brief at 7 p.m., where researchers and educators introduce their work. This year, topics range from climate change education to how fish see underwater, and from harmful algal blooms to invasive species management.

The main lecture at 8 p.m. covers equally varied topics, from native wildlife conservation at The Wilds to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s work on Lake Erie, and from managing Great Lakes water quality data to new approaches to environmental education.

Members of the public are invited to see the lecture series live at Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island. A recorded video will be made available the next day for anyone not able to travel to Lake Erie. Information on all viewing options is available at go.osu.edu/stonelablectures.

On July 19, students in Stone Lab’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Scholarship Program will present their research projects, starting at 6 p.m. This lecture is only available as a recording.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of The Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
