Frank Lichtkoppler is a Extension Specialist and Professor with the Ohio State University Sea Grant College Program. Located at the OSU Extension office in Painesville in Lake County, he is responsible for applied research, education and technology transfer of information concerning Lake Erie and the Great Lakes in Northeast Ohio.
He works with community groups, sport anglers, tourism bureaus, local boards and university researchers to teach about and conduct Lake Erie related applied research and economic impact studies. He has co-authored several applied research reports on the Great Lakes charter industry, local land use issues and natural resource economics surveys.
He serves on a number of committees and boards, including
- The Mentor Marsh Board of Management (he is the current Secretary)
- Member & Secretary of the Executive Committee of Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Board (LECO)
- Chair of the LECO Byways Committee
- Chair, Wetlands & Biodiversity Committee of the Marsh Area Regional Coalition
- Member of the Coordinating Committee of the Ashtabula River Partnership and
- Member International Association for Great Lakes Research - Outreach Committee
Frank obtained a Masters of Science degree from the Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama in 1977 in Fisheries & Aquaculture. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from OSU in 1971 with a major Natural Resources. He also enjoyed studying Lake Erie limnology for a week on board the US EPA research vessel the R/V Lake Guardian as a part of a F.T. Stone Laboratory field course in July 1999.
He has been with the Ohio Sea Grant College Program since 1981. Prior to that he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in India for two years, a county extension agent in Fulton County (Georgia) and Hamilton County (Ohio), and a research associate in the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures at Auburn University. He resides in Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio with his wife Kathleen and daughter Katianne. Living in the Lake Erie "snow belt" his hobbies include shoveling snow, driving in blizzards, and waiting for spring. He also likes reading, gardening and beachcombing.
