Objectives
Rationale
- approximately 25 research projects on Lake Erie,
- approximately 175 workshops and field trips from Stone Laboratory at Put-in-Bay,
- approximately 25 courses for college students,
- and a number of special education programs for elected officials, decision-makers, and several industrial groups, e.g. underwater welders.
All of these programs will require ship-time and, because of state budget cuts and the economy, all could be enhanced with additional support. Research conducted on the vessels will include work on aquatic nuisance species, harmful algal blooms, environmental biotechnology, remote sensing, new technologies for underwater welding, fisheries management, and ecosystem modeling.
Methodology
Free ship time will be provided on the Erie Monitor, Gibraltar III, and the BioLab (normally $704/day) for research, education and outreach projects focusing on current issues facing Lake Erie.
We are in the process of incorporating ship-time awards into our on-line reporting system to allow much greater ability to track the Benefits/Accomplishments and impacts of individual awards of ship time.
Benefits & Accomplishments
Awards from the $42,275.00 received for the 2008 season supported 5 research projects from 5 different regional universities, including research conducted under our in-house, endowment-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates program. In addition, we expanded support given to the educational efforts of the 27 college courses run from Stone Laboratory as well as workshops for community/professional groups and regional decision makers.
Awards from the $17,194.00 received for the 2007 season supported 10 research projects from 7 regional universities, including research conducted under our in-house, endowment-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates program. In addition, this helped to support educational efforts of the 24 classes run from Stone Laboratory as well as workshops for community/professional groups and regional decision makers.
