Objectives

To develop and present educational and training materials and recommended management guidelines to prevent the spread of Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) via wild baitfish harvest and interstate transfer.
To develop and present educational and training materials and recommended management guidelines to prevent the spread of Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) via wild baitfish harvest and interstate transfer.
To develop materials that can be used by resource management agencies to train employees and baitfish industry personnel in procedures to minimize the spread of ANS through their operations.
To incorporate and utilize the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) training curriculum for Baitfish and Aquaculture Operators involved in bait harvest and bait culture, including state and federal hatcheries.
To increase angler awareness to the problems of ANS transfer via bait.

Rationale

The spread of ANS via bait harvest and fish culture activities poses a significant threat to coastal and inland waters through bait bucket transfer, fish stockings and fish transfer. The development of this outreach program will educate and aid private and governmental entities that may play a role in ANS transfer to coastal and inland waters. This program will train resource agency personnel to recognize the pathways of ANS transfer and educate the public to the different ways ANS can be spread. Bait harvesters and state and federal fish hatchery personnel will be introduced to the HACCP curriculum for Baitfish and Aquaculture Operators in order to develop action plans to minimize that possibility of spread from their facilities and fish stocking operations. The "train the trainer" concept will be used by the resource agencies, bait dealers and hatchery personnel to deliver this message to the public through the use of hand out material provided by this grant at their shops and facilities.

Methodology

(1) Training workshops will target personnel at state and federal resource agencies, state and federal fish hatcheries and bait fish harvesters, wholesalers and retailers. (2) The HACCP curriculum for Baitfish and Aquaculture Operators will be presented at regional agency resource meetings and state and federal hatchery facilities. (3) HACCP will be hand delivered to bait harvesters holding harvest permits for Lake Erie, OH. (4.) Educational materials and ANS field guides will be mailed to over 200 bait dealers in the Lake Erie And Ohio River Basins along with ANS baitfish placards to be displayed above bait tanks. (5) Resource agencies and fish hatcheries will be provided with ANS training videos for personnel and public outreach.
