Objectives
The primary objectives of the proposed investigation include:
supporting LSA for assessment and validation of GFO-1 satellite and sensor performance;
recommending and development of necessary algorithm revisions for to improve GFO GDR processing;
verification of precise orbits and ionosphere corrections, and conduct the associated algorithm improvement including sea state bias;
attempt absolute calibration of GFO altimeter system in Lake Erie and develop techniques to link GFO to historic and current altimeter systems, including Geosat.

attempt absolute calibration of GFO altimeter system in Lake Erie and develop techniques to link GFO to historic and current altimeter systems, including Geosat.
Rationale
In summary, the results indicate that (1) Estimated GFO MOE (GSFC) radial orbit accuracy is about 15 cm rms and Operational Doppler orbit accuracy is about 114 cm rms; (2) the geophysical and media corrections have been validated and are well within specifications. Wet troposphere correction from GFO MWR has negligible bias with 2.4 cm rms when compared with the NCEP model computed values. No appreciable problems were found in media and geophysical corrections. NGDR and IGDR MOE agree well with time tag, SWH, π0, AGC, solid tide and wet tropospheric correction. There are differences in ionospheric, dry tropospheric and ocean tide corrections because different models were adopted. NGDR MOE and OOD agree with time tag, SWH, π0, AGC and all corrections except ionosphere correction for the same reason (Shum et al., 2001); and (3) GFO NGDR data of cycle 21 and 22 are reasonably good except for day 328 (November 24), for which all products yield crossover rms higher than normal values without apparent reasons
Methodology
GFO sensor performance and measurement system validation and recommendation for algorithm improvements have been routinely carried out for the U.S. Navy by Ohio State University (http://geodesy.eng.ohio-state.edu/gfo). We intend to integrate this effort and further develop the capability to support the NOAA LSA GFO IGDR data products.
Our efforts include providing verification and improvement for the orbit, media, geophysical, and instrument corrections to U.S. Navy's Geosat-Followon-1 (GFO-1) mission radar altimeter data.
