EXPERTISE / SPECIALIZATIONS

Dr. Alford comes to Stone Lab from the University of Tennessee, where he taught fisheries techniques and fish management courses to undergraduate and graduate students and developed a research program to address the conservation and management of fishes, aquatic insects and mussels, both in Tennessee and nationally.

He previously worked as a fisheries biologist for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, where he established and coordinated research programs on inland and marine fisheries management. Dr. Alford’s research varied from identifying spatial hierarchies of stressors to stream fish assemblages to rare crayfish assessments and impacts of freshwater diversions on estuarine fish assemblages. He also designed sampling programs for fish and shellfish following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster, as well as an offshore recreational fish creel survey program for Louisiana.

Brian holds a PhD in forest resources with an emphasis on fish management from Mississippi State University and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biological sciences from The University of Southern Mississippi. His master’s thesis research was on selective predation by sympatric darter species on larval chironomid prey. His doctoral research focused on management of sport fisheries and water quality of wadeable streams in Mississippi.
