As an Education and Outreach Associate at Ohio State’s Stone Lab, Susan Bixler has presented at a variety of informal educational outreach events including EECO, Cleveland Clinic Earth Day, BGSU Elder College, and Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Group events.

Susan Bixler is a veteran of formal education in the Michigan science classroom for 33 years prior to joining the Stone Lab Education Team staff as an Education and Outreach Specialist. As a science classroom teacher, her students were 20+ year participants in the Stone Lab Aquatic Field Trip Workshop program as well as numerous projects to promote environmental awareness and Great Lakes Literacy including “The Thunder Bay Project” for Michigan Science Teachers, GLOBE, and the National Solar Sprint Races. She continues to share her passion for teaching, outreach and curriculum development as an informal educator as part of The Ohio State University Stone Lab Education Team and Ohio Sea Grant College Program promoting teacher professional development, Stone Lab Programming, and Aquatic Workshop mini sessions most notably traveling with the Lake Erie Water Snake to share their success story. As a contributing author to the Stone Laboratory Climate Walk, Susan is currently helping to adapt current Climate Expedition kiosks (and potentially curriculum) to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center and Bay Village Schools.
She is the creator of the Ohio Sea Grant/Stone Laboratory/Congressional District 9 Communicating for a Clean Future: Ohio Marine Debris PSA Challenge in conjunction with the NOAA Marine Debris Regional Office and Marcy Kaptur, U.S. Representative, Ohio Congressional District 9. She frequently speaks in classrooms on the Marine Debris PSA Competition, as well as a week of interaction with students at Cedar Point Amusement Park’s Math and Science Week specifically targeting Marine Debris activities. Susan is instrumental in providing Marine Debris lessons in conjunction with beach clean-ups for students in Lake Erie Coastal regions for County Conservation Camps, Girl Scout Destination Programs, and Boy Scout Service Projects.
