Ohio Sea Grant Hosts An Evening with Stone Lab to Benefit Ohio State’s Island Campus

11:38 am, Thu January 28, 2016 – Ohio Sea Grant hosts an evening with Stone Lab at COSI Columbus to benefit Ohio State’s island campus

Columbus Ohio Sea Grant and the Friends of Stone Laboratory (FOSL) will be hosting the 18th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. February 10, 2016, at COSI Columbus (333 West Broad Street, Columbus Ohio). Learn about Stone Lab and COSI, meet former students, and bid in the silent auction to support scholarships for future Stone Lab summer sessions! College students can also win a Stone Lab scholarship covering room and board for a one-week course.

This year’s featured speaker is Josh Knights, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy Ohio. Knights will talk about TNC’s work “Using science, partnerships and creativity to solve freshwater problems” with a focus on efforts in the Lake Erie watershed.

In addition, two students in Stone Lab’s 2015 Research Experience for Undergraduates Program will talk about their experience and present their research projects. Ellen Warfield, Ohio State Class of 2017, worked on habitat and food selection of round gobies. Thomas Rhodes, Ohio State Class of 2015, evaluated the impact of sediments on Lake Erie algae.

Stone Lab staff, faculty members and former students will be available to answer questions from interested students, parents, and educators.

A student shuttle to COSI will run from the Ohio Union. Contact the Ohio Sea Grant office at 614-292-7411 for details and to reserve a seat.

Items available in the Silent Auction include tickets to cultural activities and sporting events, books, meals at fine-dining establishments, items for the home and family, and much more. Credit cards will be accepted for auction items and Stone Lab merchandise, along with cash and checks, and all proceeds will benefit Stone Lab’s programs and scholarships.

The event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are requested via go.osu.edu/SLevening. Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab will cover guest parking at COSI, as well as appetizers and some drinks. A cash bar will also be available. Music will be provided by Columbus-based Flute Cocktail.

The Winter Program is sponsored by FOSL and supported in part by the John H. Dunlap, Jr. Fund for Education, Outreach, and Development at Stone Laboratory. FOSL is a non-profit support group that donates time and money to assist with the planning and funding of the Laboratory. Since its creation in 1981, FOSL has raised more than $1 million in endowments; bought equipment like microscopes, computers, row boats, and sampling equipment to update the lab; supported scholarships for over 500 students; and funded research assistants and visiting professors.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. The Ohio State University’s Ohio Sea Grant Program is part of NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 33 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources.
