2016 Guest Lecture Series at Ohio State’s Stone Lab Features State, Federal Agencies, Researchers

1:18 pm, Mon June 27, 2016 – Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab are hosting the 2016 Stone Lab Guest Lecture Series through August 4, 2016

Gibraltar Island Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, are hosting the 2016 Stone Lab Guest Lecture Series through August 4, 2016. The lecture series features speakers from Ohio universities, non-profit organizations and governmental agencies, all covering topics related to the Lake Erie environment.

Some of this year’s lectures are titled:

  • Conservation at the Toledo Zoo
  • Can Lake Erie help us monitor algal blooms in the rest of the country?
  • Conserving the Great Lakes as a whole system

Each main lecture will be preceded by a research brief at 7 p.m., where researchers introduce some of the work being funded by Ohio Sea Grant. This year, topics include global warming, agricultural impacts on algal blooms, and fish habitat in the Maumee River.

Members of the public are invited to see the lecture series live at Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island. A webcast is also accessible online to anyone who can’t travel to Lake Erie.

Information on both viewing options is available at go.osu.edu/guestlectures. Recordings of previous lectures are available on YouTube at youtube.com/user/ohioseagrant.

On July 21, students in Stone Lab’s Research Experience for Undergraduates Scholarship Program will present their research projects. Guests can still travel to Gibraltar Island or watch the presentations online, just as they do for the other lectures. The REU presentations start at 6pm, so please plan accordingly.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
