Ohio Sea Grant Issues Request for Proposals for 2018-2020 Research Projects

4:48 pm, Fri April 7, 2017 – Ohio Sea Grant is requesting pre-proposals for one- to two-year research projects on Great Lakes issues

Ohio Sea Grant is requesting pre-proposals for one- to two-year research projects on Great Lakes issues with particular significance to Ohio and Lake Erie. Pre-proposals must be submitted online by 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017.

This year Ohio Sea Grant’s main priorities for funding include:

  • Crude Oil Transport (e.g., risk, economic evaluation of transport methods, outreach and education materials for risk evaluation, spill and emergency preparedness)
  • Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (e.g., impacts to biota, ability of both wastewater and water treatment facilities to address these issues, concentrations within receiving waterbodies)
  • Tourism and Coastal Economic Development (e.g., market and nonmarket value of the Lake Erie watershed)
  • Aquaculture (e.g., research and extension efforts that support improvements in nutrition, reproduction, larval rearing, and genomics that seek to address questions, barriers, or hurdles impeding the advancement of aquaculture initiatives)
  • Sensor Technology Development (e.g., nutrient and toxin sensors)
  • Environmental Economics
  • Environmental Education Curriculum to compliment the Lake Erie Literacy Principles

In addition to these priorities, Ohio Sea Grant also works with state agencies like the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Department of Agriculture to address state needs through research. Specific agency priorities are listed in the proposal guidelines, with research directly addressing these needs encouraged, but not required.

Because the preference is to support a variety of projects, proposals should not exceed $60,000 per year, including indirect costs. Projects lasting up to two years are acceptable. The application and use, as well as social and economic impacts of research results, are important considerations for Ohio Sea Grant funding, as is collaboration with industry and state, regional or federal agencies.

Visit ohioseagrant.osu.edu/research/funding for proposal guidelines, required forms and to submit your documents. The page also includes Ohio Sea Grant’s 2018-2021 strategic plan to guide researchers on aligning their projects with state priorities.

A webinar on June 15, 2017 at 1 p.m. will discuss the full proposal process and give researchers a chance to ask questions. Full proposals will be due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2017.
