Gibraltar Island, OH The public will have a chance to explore The Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie during the Friends of Stone Laboratory (FOSL) 13th Annual Open House from 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 11. No reservations are needed. Free transportation will be available from the Ohio State University Research Building on South Bass Island to Gibraltar Island.
Activities at the Open House include:
• Tours of Stone Laboratory
• Tours of the 6.5-acre island and view Cooke Castle
• Tours of the Aquatic Visitors Center
• Talks and Laboratory sessions
• Historical photos, summer class information, publications
• Tours of Historic South Bass Island Lighthouse (transportation not provided)
"Our annual Open House combines science and history by allowing our visitors to learn about Lake Erie research issues and education programs at Stone Laboratory in addition to touring the historic Cooke Castle and South Bass Island Lighthouse," says Dr. Jeffrey Reutter, Director of Stone Laboratory.
You can begin your tour at the Ohio State University Research Building on South Bass Island beside the Aquatic Visitors Center, at the South Bass Island Lighthouse or on Gibraltar Island. Our last scheduled boat will leave from the Research Building dock to Gibraltar Island at 3:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by FOSL, Stone Laboratory, and Ohio Sea Grant.
