OSU Educator Receives Congressional Flag, Commendations for Career Accomplishments

12:00 pm, Tue August 9, 2011 – Recognizing Stone Lab Co-Manager Hageman’s service to the program, the state, and Lake Erie

Put-in-Bay, OH John Hageman will be retiring at the end of August, but his service to Ohio State University since 1977, mostly with Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory, hasn’t gone unnoticed. In fact, U.S. 5th District Representative Bob Latta (R-Ohio) recognized Stone Lab Co-Manager Hageman’s service to the program, the state, and Lake Erie by flying an American flag over the U.S. Capitol on July 14. Ohio Senator Mark Wagoner (R-Ottawa Hills) and Ohio Representative Dennis Murray (D-Sandusky) presented the flag to Hageman Thursday, August 4 as part of Ohio Sea Grant’s Legislative Days on Lake Erie.

Wagoner and Murray also presented Hageman with proclamations from the House of Representatives of Ohio’s 129th General Assembly and Ohio Senate congratulating him for his service to the state.

Hageman first experienced Stone Lab on a field trip as a high school sophomore. He was able to return the next two years on trips with high school classes and as Co-Manager of the laboratory, he has built the program that ignited his interest in aquatic biology.

Under Hageman’s leadership, Stone Lab’s science workshop field trip program has grown from welcoming 1,300 students in grades 4-12 to 7,000 students. The program allows students to be Lake Erie scientists for a day, conducting fish trawls, studying organisms under microscopes, dissecting fish, and exploring other aspects of the aquatic environment.

The House’s proclamation declared Hageman has "demonstrated an unwavering dedication to performing his duties and fulfilling his responsibilities with the utmost efficiency and competence. The manager of the laboratory since 1987, he has dedicated his research to larval fish collection, identification, distribution, and population and survival, and he has been instrumental in developing and leading the field trip, conference, and workshop program."

"This is totally unexpected," Hageman said. "What an honor and a thrill to be recognized for just doing my job. I appreciate the legislators taking time from their busy schedule to honor me like this."

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is The Ohio State University’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the education and research facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. The Ohio State University’s Ohio Sea Grant Program is part of NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 32 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources.
