12:00 pm, Wed February 8, 2012 –

Gibraltar Island, OH College students interested in out-of-the-ordinary internships can apply for two great opportunities this summer beginning in June. Two internships with the National Park Service at Perry’s Memorial on South Bass Island, and two Hospitality Management internships on Gibraltar Island are available through Stone Laboratory, Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie. Applications for the positions are due by March 9, 2012.

"Both of these internship opportunities offer unique and exciting experiences on Ohio’s north coast," says Matt Thomas, Stone Laboratory Manager. "Students can work a summer job with the National Park Service while earning credit, or earn credit for their hospitality management internship while living on an island."

As National Park Service (NPS) employees, interns at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial at Put-in-Bay have the opportunity to educate the public, explain the ecology of Lake Erie, and interpret the history of the monument and the battle of Lake Erie. Selected students will work three days per week at the memorial while taking a five-week course at Stone Lab. Students will fill the internship from early June through August and earn $10.50 – $13 per hour. To qualify for the NPS internship, students must be enrolled for full-time classes for fall 2012. Students must submit their resume, a brief cover letter, Stone Lab course application, and Ohio State University Employment Form. Students can download applications at stonelab.osu.edu/applynow .

College students interested in hotel management, restaurant operation, and customer service can earn credit for a Hospitality Management internship. In addition to free room and board, selected students will receive $8 per hour. Duties include, but are not limited to, meal planning and preparation; special event planning; and all aspects of dormitory operations, such as scheduling and housekeeping. The position runs from June through August, although start and end dates are flexible. Students must apply at www.jobsatosu.com/postings/32987 before March 9, 2012.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State University’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the education and research facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
