Columbus, OH Ohio Sea Grant and the Friends of Stone Laboratory (FOSL) hosted the 15th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction on January 30, 2013, on Ohio State University’s Columbus campus. In addition to learning about upcoming Stone Lab projects and reviewing the 2012 summer season, guests helped raise $2,300 for Stone Lab scholarships and other programming during the annual event. FOSL also awarded door prizes, including a scholarship to cover room and meals for one week at Stone Laboratory (a $415 value) to students who attended the event.
Speakers at this year’s Winter Program included Ohio Sea Grant Director Jeff Reutter, Assistant Director Chris Winslow, Stone Lab Education & Outreach Coordinator Kristin Stanford, and Stone Lab Research Coordinator Justin Chaffin. FOSL President Sheila Lewicki, Ohio State University Associate Vice President for Research Administration Jan Weisenberger, and Ohio State Representative and Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern also offered comments on Stone Lab’s role in Lake Erie research, education, and outreach.

The Winter Program is sponsored by FOSL and supported in part by the John H. Dunlap, Jr. Fund for Education, Outreach, and Development at Stone Laboratory. FOSL is a non-profit support group that donates time and money to assist with the planning and funding of the Laboratory. Since its creation in 1981, FOSL has raised more than $1 million in endowments; bought equipment like microscopes, computers, row boats, and sampling equipment to update the lab; supported scholarships for over 500 students; and funded research assistants and visiting professors.
Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program.
