Gibraltar Island, OH It may not feel like summer right now, but 2014 summer science classes and workshops at Stone Laboratory have just opened to interested applicants. Courses at Stone Lab, Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie, get students out into the field and onto the lake to experience science first-hand while earning college credit that is transferable to most colleges and universities.

Advanced high school students have a choice of six introductory science classes and earn two college semester credits in a week; college and graduate students can earn two credits in a week or four credits in five-week upper-level courses. Small class sizes and interaction with some of the country’s leading researchers give students the opportunity to learn science from the experts, and to make connections that could last a lifetime.

In five different one-week courses, classroom teachers and informal educators can earn credit toward their Highly Qualified Teacher certification while networking with fellow education professionals. Teachers participate in hands-on, project-based learning, providing new ideas they can transfer to the classroom.

This summer’s courses are listed at stonelab.osu.edu/courses, and applications are available at stonelab.osu.edu/applynow. Courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis so all students and educators are encouraged to submit their application by March 18, 2014.

All students and educators in for-credit courses (with the exception of EEOB 3189) are eligible for tuition assistance, which usually ranges from $100 to $2,500 based on need and academic record. Students enrolled in five-week classes can also work part-time at the lab to earn room and board; a Hospitality Internship on Gibraltar Island is also available. The scholarship application deadline for college students and educators is March 7; high school students should submit their scholarship applications by March 18. Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the education and research facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
