Uncertainties of a Changing Climate Topic of Ohio State Climate Webinar

12:00 pm, Wed March 20, 2013 –

Columbus, OH The Ohio State University Climate Change Outreach Team will present “Climate Change, Uncertainty & Communication”? on Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Dr. Mark Berliner, Professor and Chair of Ohio State’s Department of Statistics, will discuss the role of uncertainty in making policy decisions, strategies for dealing with various aspects of uncertainty, and challenges in communicating with diverse groups.

The webinar will be held on March 27 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern Time. Attendance is free, but registration is required to receive log-in information — visit changingclimate.osu.edu to sign up. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.

Dr. Berliner will discuss how decision support, a collection for tools for the communication of policy issues, can help address the challenges of making decisions about actions to address climate change. He will also introduce how uncertainty, which is always a part of making predictions about the future,  can be addressed and better understood in both the policymaking process and in everyday decisions about climate mitigation and adaptation.

Dr. Berliner is Professor and Chair of the Department of Statistics at Ohio State University. He has served as Geophysical Statistics Project Leader at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, as a Contributing Author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and as co-chair of the American Statistical Association’s Advisory Committee on Climate Change Policy. He is Vice-Chair of the Activity Group on Uncertainty Quantification of The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

The OSU Climate Change Outreach Team is a partnership among multiple departments within The Ohio State University, including OSU Extension, Ohio Sea Grant, the Department of Agricultural, Environmental & Development Economics, and the School of Environment & Natural Resources, to help localize the climate change issue by bringing research and resources to Ohioans and Great Lakes residents. More information about the team’s work is available at changingclimate.osu.edu.
