Ohio Sea Grant’s 15th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction to Benefit Ohio State’s S

Columbus, OH Ohio Sea Grant and the Friends of Stone Laboratory (FOSL) will be hosting the 15th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction from 7 to 9:30 p.m. January 30, 2013, at the Longaberger Alumni House (2200 Olentangy River Road) on Ohio State University’s Columbus campus. Guests can learn about recent Stone Lab program updates and new research projects, bid in the silent auction, and college students can win a Stone Laboratory scholarship.

Speakers at this year’s event will recap the 2012 Stone Lab season and preview plans for the coming year. Stone Lab Research Coordinator Justin Chaffin will provide an overview of the Lab’s research program, recently added research capabilities, and the new water quality lab due to open this spring. Education & Outreach Coordinator Dr. Kristin Stanford will discuss the 2012 Lake Erie Science Field Trip program, the special events held at the Lab for a variety of interest groups, and plans for the 2013 season.

Dr. Chris Winslow, Ohio Sea Grant Assistant Director, will talk about 2012 Stone Lab enrollment in the context of the transition to semesters, and about the 2013 summer curriculum, as well as the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Scholarship program, other tuition assistance, and jobs at the Lab. Winslow will also introduce Ohio Sea Grant’s new Request for Proposals, which will open for submissions from researchers across the Great Lakes region in March. Ohio Sea Grant Director Dr. Jeff Reutter will close the presentations with a review of recent Program accomplishments and summarize Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab’s plans for the future. 

Guests can also learn more about Stone Lab’s hands-on science classes and activities, which range from field trips to summer classes and summer research experiences. Stone Laboratory staff and faculty members will be available to answer questions from interested students, parents, and educators.

FOSL will award door prizes, including a scholarship to cover room and meals for one week at Stone Laboratory, a $415 value. These prizes are open to registered college students in any college or university, but students must be present to win.

Items available in the Silent Auction include tickets to cultural activities and sporting events, books/literature, meals at fine-dining establishments, items for the home and family, and much more. Credit cards will be accepted for the first time this year, along with cash and checks, and all proceeds will benefit Stone Lab’s programs and scholarships.

The event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are requested via Columbus-based Gruviera Armonico will provide musical entertainment throughout the evening.

The Winter Program is sponsored by FOSL and supported in part by the John H. Dunlap, Jr. Fund for Education, Outreach, and Development at Stone Laboratory. FOSL is a non-profit support group that donates time and money to assist with the planning and funding of the Laboratory. Since its creation in 1981, FOSL has raised more than $1 million in endowments; bought equipment like microscopes, computers, row boats, and sampling equipment to update the lab; supported scholarships for over 500 students; and funded research assistants and visiting professors.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program.
