Stone Lab Workshops Offer a Taste of Lake Erie Science and Recreation

12:00 pm, Tue March 26, 2013 –

Gibraltar Island, OH In addition to a wide range of college classes, Stone Lab, Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, is once again offering non-credit workshops this summer and early fall. These one- to three-day workshops allow participants of all ages to catch a glimpse of Lake Erie science and recreation opportunities, and most get a taste of the Stone Lab experience with an overnight stay on Gibraltar Island.

Workshops in fish sampling and algae identification introduce students to some of Lake Erie’s smallest inhabitants, and some of the courses may be taken for EPA professional development contact hours. Stone Lab’s Outdoor Photography Workshop focuses on improving students’ digital photography skills to help them move from snapshots to truly stunning nature photography — a sampling of last year’s photos can be seen at flic.kr/s/aHsjCzfUfx. And a Lake Erie Sport Fishing course introduces hobby anglers to new fishing techniques and background on fish behavior to improve their future fishing experiences.

All of this summer’s workshops are listed at stonelab.osu.edu/courses/noncredit, and applications are available at stonelab.osu.edu/applynow. Workshops are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so all applicants are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible. More information about costs is available on the website for each individual workshop.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
