Scholarships Help Students Attend Summer Science Classes at Ohio State’s Stone Lab

Gibraltar Island, OH Students and educators who want to take science classes this summer at Stone Laboratory, Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie, can still apply for tuition assistance through the Stone Lab scholarship program. College students and educators must submit applications by Friday, March 7, 2014. The deadline for high school applicants is Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

Scholarship amounts vary depending on applicants’ need and academic merit, and range from $100 to $1,500 per student. College students taking a five-week class can also work at Stone Lab to cover their room and board; more information is posted at stonelab.osu.edu/costs/jobs. Full-time positions and a Hospitality Internship are also available for qualified students.

Stone Lab classes last one week or five weeks and are open to students at any school or university. Course credits are based on Ohio State University’s semester credit system and are transferable to most colleges and universities.

Classes cover a wide range of science subjects, from ecology and evolution to herpetology and spider biology. Introductory and advanced classes allow high school, college, and graduate students to find something that suits their needs. Educators are welcome to apply for any of the classes offered, as well as for specific educator courses that focus on teaching Great Lakes science. Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s Island Campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie. Stone Lab offers 25 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators.
