Columbus The 2018 Stone Lab Winter Program gives alumni, donors and those interested in the lab’s work a chance to connect, learn about education opportunities and raise funds that support scholarships for future students. This year’s event will be held on February 19 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Longaberger Alumni House on The Ohio State University’s Columbus campus (2200 Olentangy River Road).
Attendance is free, but RSVPs are requested at go.osu.edu/SLevening. Parking at the Alumni House requires a free parking pass, available online or at the event entrance. A cash bar will be available, along with light hors d’oeuvres.
Guests will be able to purchase Stone Lab merchandise, including some new designs, as well as bid in the silent auction. The following items will be up for bidding:
- An antique microscope
- A Stone Lab art print
- A bed & breakfast package at Mohican Lodge
- A two-ticket package to the February 20 Ohio State Men’s Basketball game
- A Land-Grant Brewing Company gift basket
- A Stone Lab merchandise gift basket
Proceeds from merchandise sales and auction bids go toward Stone Lab scholarships, which help about 40 students a year attend summer classes at the lab.
The event’s main speaker will be Dr. Mažeika Sullivan, associate professor and assistant director in the School of Environment & Natural Resources and director of the Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park at The Ohio State University. Sullivan will talk about connections between and conservation of aquatic ecosystems like wetlands and rivers.
Program guests will also hear from Andrew Oppliger, a forestry, fisheries and wildlife major at Ohio State who participated in Stone Lab’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Scholarship Program. He studied how fish see underwater, and how their vision is affected by algal blooms and other factors that make the water less clear.
Additional remarks will be offered by Dr. Chris Winslow, director of Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab, Dr. Thomas Hall, president of the Friends of Stone Lab (FOSL), Dr. Janet Weisenberger, senior associate vice president for research, and Dr. Jeff Sharp, director of Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources.
Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program.
