Gibraltar Island Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, is now accepting applications for 2020 summer classes. Located on Gibraltar Island near Put-in-Bay, the lab offers introductory and upper-level college classes for undergraduate, graduate and advanced high school students, on topics ranging from algae identification to zoology.
Classes are hands-on, with daily field trips and laboratory sessions that make Lake Erie science directly accessible to students. Classes start as early as May 17 and run as late as October 11. Emily Esplandiu, a biology major at The Ohio State University, has attended Stone Lab classes for the past two summers. “I was taking classes that were actually fun and not just sitting in a lecture of 300 people,” she said. “It’s easier to engage and I feel like I will be more likely to talk and ask questions back on campus. It was one of the best times I’ve ever had. I already miss it!”
New this year is a four-week Environment and Natural Resources Policy course from Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources. Students will cover topics ranging from the foundations of environmental policy to the agencies implementing them, as well as ways to resolve environmental disputes. The three-credit course runs June 1-26.
Stone Lab applications are now open at go.osu.edu/sciencerequires. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is March 1, but applications will be accepted until May 31 (July 1 for current Ohio State students).
Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. Established in 1895, Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States and the center of The Ohio State University’s teaching and research on Lake Erie.
