Ohio Clean Marinas Program Continues to Serve the Ohio Marina Industry

12:00 pm, Tue April 13, 2021 – The conference covered a variety of topics including fisheries updates, federal and state legislative boating updates, lake levels, marine debris, and recycling

Columbus, Ohio February’s virtual Ohio Marina Conference honored two northern Ohio marinas, according to Ohio Sea Grant. The Mentor Harbor Yachting Club was awarded Platinum Certification status in 2020 and the Huron Lagoons Marina was named Marina of the Year.

In addition to the awards ceremony and educational sessions, the conference featured Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Dr. Chris Winslow, director of Ohio Sea Grant. The two agencies sponsor the statewide Ohio Clean Marinas Program, along with industry partner Lake Erie Marine Trades Association.

There are currently 82 certified Ohio Clean Marinas, and a recently launched tiered certification program enables marinas to demonstrate further environmental stewardship by achieving gold or platinum status. A complete list of Ohio Clean Marinas can be found at go.osu.edu/GLCleanMarinasMap.

The conference covered a variety of topics including fisheries updates, federal and state legislative boating updates, lake levels, marine debris, and recycling. Anyone interested in accessing conference recordings can do so at: go.osu.edu/ohiomarinaconference2021.

Additional virtual workshops to further educate marinas about the Clean Marinas program will be held later this month. A workshop for coastal marinas will be held on Monday, April 19 from 1-3 pm, and one for inland marinas will be held on Wednesday, April 21 from 1-3 pm. Both sessions will be recorded. Register at: go.osu.edu/spring2021cleanmarinaworkshops.

In addition to assisting Ohio marinas with certification, the program also coordinates shrink wrap recycling. Anyone interested in learning more about recycling and shrink wrap drop off locations can fill out an interest form at go.osu.edu/shrinkwraprecycling.

Since its inception in 2003, the Ohio Clean Marinas Program has worked with state, federal, and local agencies, marina owners and marine trades industry associations to achieve a balance between environmental sustainability and economic stability for the marina industry in Ohio.

The Ohio Clean Marinas Program is a partnership initiative between Ohio Sea Grant and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Parks and Watercraft and Office of Coastal Management. The program supports marinas across Ohio by providing education and technical assistance on environmental topics and promoting a voluntary, incentive-based certification program to recognize those marinas that go above and beyond environmental regulations.
