Ohio Sea Grant Knauss Fellows Receive Placements for Their Year in Washington, D.C.

Columbus, Ohio Ohio Sea Grant’s four 2022 Knauss fellowship finalists have completed Placement Week in Washington. D.C., meeting with potential host offices and interviewing for positions of interest. All four fellows will work in executive branch offices.

Heather Glon is a Ph.D. candidate in The Ohio State University’s Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology, but also takes classes in public policy and management in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs. She will be working in NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service as a Fisheries-Dependent Data Specialist – part of the Office of Science and Technology’s National Observer Program – to support efforts to modernize the fisheries-dependent data collection programs that collect information from commercial and recreational fisheries.

Steven Hein is a doctoral candidate in Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology at Miami University, where he studies conservation and management of imperiled freshwater pearly mussels. He will join the policy team of NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research office in the Policy and Congressional Affairs Branch, working in policy analysis and helping to facilitate initiatives across government offices.

Jeffrey Kast is a Ph.D. candidate in Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Science, studying agricultural conversation practices in Lake Erie’s western basin through the college’s School of Environment and Natural Resources. He will be working as a Social Science Policy and Planning Liaison with both the National Sea Grant Office and NOAA’s Weather Program Office as part of NOAA’s Social Science Committee, aiding in integrating the social sciences into the agency’s work.

Kaitlen Lang is a M.S. candidate in biology at The University of Toledo, studying how grass carp mortality rates can indicate success in managing this invasive species. She joins NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research branch as an Ocean Decade Policy Assistant in the Office of the Assistant Administrator, where she’ll be working to further the United States’ involvement in the United Nations Ocean Decade, a global framework for sustainably managing the world’s oceans.

The prestigious John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship is a year-long NOAA Sea Grant program that places highly qualified graduate students in host offices in the legislative and executive branches of U.S. government. The four Ohio finalists join a group of 74 graduate students recommended to the National Sea Grant office from 28 Sea Grant programs across the country.
