Stone Lab Workshops Offer Professional Development Opportunities and an Up-Close Look at Lake Erie

10:20 am, Mon May 23, 2022 – Workshops at Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, are the perfect way to add some professional development to your summer

Gibraltar Island Workshops at Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, are the perfect way to add some professional development to the summer. This year’s offerings last two to three days, and some workshops offer continuing education contact hours for educators and agency personnel.

For those looking to expand their professional know-how, Algae Identification (August 8-9, 2022) helps prepare water treatment plant operators for harmful algal blooms that may affect their water intakes.

Fish-Sampling Techniques (October 8-9, 2022) was developed with the help of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and is taught with ODNR staff to give job seekers experience with techniques needed for agency employment. Learn more about the workshop at youtu.be/hxjBB23fCDk.

For teachers and other educators, Workshop in Environmental Education: Water and Wildlife Training for Educators (June 6-12, 2022) offers a field-based opportunity to receive certifications in “Project Wild,” “Project Wild Aquatic,” “Science & Civics,” “Project Wet” and “Healthy Water, Healthy People.” Scholarship funds to cover workshop fees are available for this class.

A complete listing of 2022 workshops is available online at go.osu.edu/SLworkshops. Workshop registration occurs on a rolling basis, but early application is recommended to reserve a spot.

Stone Lab’s for-credit courses, available at go.osu.edu/SLcourses, can also be taken as non-credit workshops with approval of the instructor.

Located on the 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay harbor, Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie and the research, education, and outreach facility of the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. The Ohio Sea Grant College Program is part of The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 34 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources.
