Ohio Sea Grant Extension Educators Win Regional Award

12:00 pm, Tue February 13, 2024 – Dr. Scott Hardy and Sarah Orlando from Ohio Sea Grant were awarded the Ohio NACDEP Educational Technology team award for their project Advancing Stormwater Management at Marinas in the Great Lakes which implemented green infrastructure pilot projects to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality at coastal marinas

Two Ohio Sea Grant Extension educators were recently honored with a regional award from the National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals (NACDEP) for their green infrastructure work.

Dr. Scott Hardy, Ohio Sea Grant extension educator, and Sarah Orlando, Clean Marinas program manager, won the Ohio NACDEP Educational Technology team award for their project “Advancing Stormwater Management at Marinas in the Great Lakes”.

The project, through a grant from the Great Lakes Protection Fund, implemented four green infrastructure pilot projects in Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin and monitored their ability to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality at coastal marinas. Project partners from the Ohio Clean Marinas Program, Michigan Sea Grant, Wisconsin Sea Grant, and Ohio State’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences collaborated to give presentations and disseminate information on a Decision Support Tool and other visualization resources, including an online toolkit website.

The pilot project, tool, visualization resources, and website help educate marina owners and operators about green infrastructure and inform decision making about stormwater mitigation in coastal environments.

“I’m proud of Scott, Sarah, and their team of partners on this project,” said Ohio Sea Grant Extension Program Leader Tory Gabriel. “It’s a shining example of Sea Grant Extension in action: working with partners from academia and the private sector to utilize technology and outreach; ultimately improving stormwater management and water quality in marinas and providing a template for others to follow.”

Congratulations to Sarah and Scott!
