Stone Lab Workshops Offer Professional Development Opportunities and Learning on Lake Erie

12:00 pm, Sun April 28, 2024 – Workshops at Stone Lab are the perfect way to add some professional development to the summer

Gibraltar Island Workshops at Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, are the perfect way to add some professional development to the summer. This year’s offerings last two to three days, and some workshops offer EPA continuing education contact hours for agency personnel.

Individuals 16 years or older interested in learning the technical concepts of fishing used by experienced Lake Erie angles, while also learning the science behind it, will enjoy taking Lake Erie Sport Fishing (May 31-June 2).

For those looking to expand their professional know-how, Algae Identification (August 13-14, 2024) and Dealing with Cyanobacteria and Emerging Contaminants of Concern (August 15-16, 2024) help prepare water treatment plant operators for harmful algal blooms that may affect their water intakes.

A new workshop, Moss Identification and Ecology (Aug 9-11, 2024), is geared toward educators, botanically-oriented amateur naturalists, and natural resource professionals and will teach hand lens and microscope skills needed to key out unknown moss specimens, as well as enable field- recognition of the most common genera.

Fish-Sampling Techniques (October 5-6, 2024) was developed with the help of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and is taught with ODNR staff to give job seekers experience with techniques needed for agency employment. Learn more about the workshop at youtu.be/hxjBB23fCDk.

A complete listing of 2024 workshops is available online at go.osu.edu/SLworkshops. Workshop registration occurs on a rolling basis, but early application is recommended to reserve a spot.

Stone Lab’s for-credit courses, available at go.osu.edu/SLcourses, can also be taken as non-credit workshops with approval of the instructor.
