Stone Lab Course and Scholarship Applications Open for Summer 2025

12:00 pm, Thu January 30, 2025 – Stone Laboratory is now accepting applications for 2025 summer classes

Gibraltar Island, Ohio Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, is now accepting applications for 2025 summer classes. Located on Gibraltar Island near Put-in-Bay, the lab offers introductory and upper-level college classes for undergraduate, graduate, and advanced high school students, as well as teachers, on topics ranging from algae identification to aquatic biology.

Classes are hands-on, with numerous field trips and laboratory sessions that make Lake Erie science directly accessible to students.

For Summer 2025, the room and meals fee will be reduced by 50% for all students taking a credit course, with classes starting as early as May 12 and running as late as October 4. A full list of courses and professional development workshops, which range from one day to six weeks in length, is available online at go.osu.edu/SLcourses.

Stone Lab awards scholarships each year based on both academic merit and financial need. The scholarship application is open with a deadline of February 15, 2025, for Ohio State students and a deadline of March 28, 2025 for non-Ohio State students and high school students. All those taking courses or workshops are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit go.osu.edu/aid.

Alex Kushnir, environmental science major at The Ohio State University, discovered her passion for water quality science at Stone Lab’s research facility in the summer.

Alex Kushnir, an environmental major at The Ohio State University, has attended Stone Lab classes for two summers, first as a Semester at Stone Lab scholarship recipient and then as a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) fellow. “My experience really put my career path into perspective by allowing me to learn more about what interests me the most and in what aspects of research my skills are most valuable,” she said. “The experience as a whole also helped me to prove myself that I can do well outside my comfort zone.”

Returning to Stone Lab’s summer 2025 schedule are Ecology, a six-week, four-credit advanced level course on the distribution and abundance of species and ecosystem dynamics, as well as an Understanding Spiders workshop, a two-day, non-credit workshop about the common behaviors and habits of the spider families in the field.

Stone Lab also offers professional development for water resource professionals who are seeking continuing education through Stone Lab workshops on topics such as cyanobacteria and algae or moss identification.

Ohio Sea Grant is supported by The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) School of Environment and Natural Resources, Ohio State University Extension, and NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 34 Sea Grant programs nation-wide dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources.
