GIBRALTAR ISLAND, OH Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, is offering two- and three-day workshops this summer and fall for working professionals and job seekers. The six different workshops span various science topics for learning and professional development.
Algae Identification (Aug. 18-19, 2025) and Dealing with Cyanobacteria and Emerging Contaminants of Concern (Aug. 20-21, 2025) offer water and natural resource professionals hands-on experience, lectures, and laboratory and field work. Both workshops are offered with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) contact hours for Ohio EPA certified Drinking Water (DW) operators.

Fish Sampling Techniques (Oct. 4-5, 2025) is an intensive weekend workshop offered this fall for students with interests in seasonal agency work and fisheries biology professions. Participants will learn from Stone Lab, Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Wildlife (ODW) and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) biologists about fish-sampling techniques and gear.
Educators interested in learning how to incorporate environmental topics into their curriculum can register for the Water and Wildlife Workshop for Educators (July 28-30, 2025). Through this workshop, educators can receive certificates for three education programs: “Project WET” (Water Education for Teachers), “Project WILD” (Wildlife Education for Teachers), and “Project Learning Tree” (Environmental Education for Teachers of Pre-K through 12).
Understanding Spiders (Aug. 22-24, 2025) is a new workshop offered this year for individuals 16 and older to learn all about spiders, including where and how to find them, their common behaviors, and techniques for identifying them.
Educators, amateur naturalists, and natural resource professionals alike can learn about Moss Identification and Ecology (Aug. 1-3, 2025). Participants will learn how to identify specimens using the hand lens and microscope, as well as how to field-recognize common genera.

Stone Lab’s for-credit courses, available at go.osu.edu/SLcourses, can also be taken as non-credit workshops with approval of the instructor.
