Throughout June and July, guest speakers will give seminars on environmental topics as part of Stone Lab’s Thursday night series. Audience members are welcome to ask the speaker questions at the end of the presentation. All presentations will be recorded, and archives of prior webinars are available to watch on Ohio Sea Grant’s website.
Upcoming presentations will cover a variety of topics, from stream monitoring to algal bloom toxins to fish conservation. On June 25, Dr. Nate Manning of Heidelberg University’s National Center for Water Quality Research will give a presentation on
monitoring nutrients in Lake Erie watersheds. Then, on July 2, Dr. Daniel Neelon of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District will share insights about finding career paths in ecology in a seminar titled “Lessons from Frogs.”
Learn about the intersection of technology and the great outdoors from Athony Mosinski of the Ohio Division of Wildlife in his Summer Seminar on July 9. Mosinski will share how modern GIS tools help with “Mapping Ohio’s Wild Side” for current and future generations.
Next, on July 16, Dr. Robbie M. Martin of the University of Tennessee will discuss ongoing research on how nitrogen availability affects toxin phenotypes in Microcystis aeruginosa, a species of Lake Erie cyanobacteria.
Focusing on Ohio’s rare and endangered fish species, The Ohio State University’s Brian Zimmerman will present “Reintroductions of Ohio’s Fishes of Greatest Conservation Need” on July 23. He will provide an overview of his 10 years of effort performing translocations and captive propagation with 16 species and counting on Ohio’s fish species on the Greatest Conservation Need list.
