Toxic Algae, Undrinkable Water, and Dead Zones in Lake Erie: The Problems and Solutions
Lake Erie is the southernmost, shallowest, warmest and most productive of the Great Lakes. It has a long history of pollution problems. The problems of the 1970s were solved and but they have returned. To solve the toxic algae problem, the dead zone in the central basin, and nuisance algae problems in the eastern basin, we need to reduce the amount of phosphorus going into the lake by 40%. These problems and the solutions will be discussed.
