2016 Buckeye Island Hop

September 23, 2016 – This annual event gives alumni and friends of Ohio State a chance to take part in an outdoor volunteer project, and meet new people

NOTE This event occurs in the past

Spend a weekend on the Lake Erie islands at the Buckeye Island Hop, September 23-25, 2016, sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Society, the Columbiana County Alumni Club, the Friends of Stone Laboratory, and The Ohio State University Retirees Association. This annual event gives alumni and friends of Ohio State a chance to check out Gibraltar and South Bass islands, take part in an outdoor volunteer project, and meet new people.

Getting Here

On Friday night, leave from Port Clinton on the Jet Express at 7:15 p.m. or from Catawba Island on the Miller Ferry at 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. If you’re arriving Saturday morning, take the 8:45 a.m. Jet Express or the 8:30 a.m. Miller Ferry. Stone Lab vans will take you to the Stone Lab Field Station Office on South Bass, then you’ll hop on over to Gibraltar on a research vessel or water taxi. Learn more about Put-in-Bay at visitputinbay.com.

Gear to Bring

Fall weather on Gibraltar is unpredictable and often cold, so check the forecast and dress accordingly in clothes that can get dirty. If it rains, we’ll still be working, which makes rain gear a plus. Meals and bed linens (dormitory style bunk beds) will be provided, but be sure to bring toiletries. And be sure to pack your work gloves, slip-resistant footwear, and a flashlight! Typical jobs include painting, weeding, landscaping, organizing sheds, and misc. house cleaning.

Anglers are welcome to bring along their fishing gear with a fishing license, and birders should bring their binoculars. Spending money is always recommended for ferry ride fees, Stone Lab merchandise, land and water taxis, and other free-time activities.

Older Children are Welcome

Children ages 10 and older are welcome to participate in all activities but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Minors 17 and younger must be supervised by a parent at all times, including the volunteer activity. Because there are no daycare facilities, younger children should be left at home.

Register

Registration is not final until you receive confirmation from the Put-in-Bay Stone Lab office. Registration is required even if you arrange accommodations and meals elsewhere. Please call 419-285-1800 with questions. Registrations must be received by the Stone Lab office no later than 5:00 p.m, on September 16, 2016. Registration is limited and on a first come, first served basis. Housing is dormitory-style, including bunk beds.
