Aquaculture includes the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of fish, shellfish, algae, and other aquatic organisms in all types of natural and human constructed water environments. Essentially, aquaculture is farming in water. Nicole Wright, Ohio Sea Grant Aquaculture Extension Specialist, shared what aquaculture in Ohio looks like, the reasons why fish are farmed, and the challenges and opportunities for this agricultural sector in Ohio.

As Aquaculture Extension Educator, Nicole connects researchers, OSU Extension aquaculture specialists and industry professionals while assisting to build Sea Grant’s Great Lakes Aquaculture Collaborative (GLAC). She also manages the daily needs of the Lake Erie and Aquatic Research Network (LEARN), a regional research consortium of field stations and diverse researchers to address the grand challenges facing Lake Erie.
