Each Thursday in June and July, Stone Lab and Ohio Sea Grant will host guest speakers during its summer college course season.
Audience members, including those joining online, will be able to ask the speaker questions at the end of the presentation. Presentations will be recorded and made available for free on the Ohio Sea Grant website.
In this week’s presentation, Ohio State’s Brian Zimmerman will provide an overview of 10 years of effort doing translocations and captive propagation with 16 species and counting on Ohio’s fish species on the Greatest Conservation Need list.
Brian Zimmerman from Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources has been captivated by native North American freshwater fish since high school, when his grandmother presented him with a copy of Milton B. Trautman’s Fishes of Ohio. He received his bachelor’s degree at Heidelberg College, where he double-majored in Water Resources and Environmental Biology with Dr. Ken Baker before completing his MS in Aquatic Ecology under Dr. Jeff Minor at Bowling Green State University. Brian worked at several jobs in the fisheries field, but was finally able to pursue his interest in surveying Ohio’s fish and updating their distribution when he began the Fishes of Ohio Inventory project through The Ohio State University in 2011, which led to the publication of the book A Naturalist’s Guide to the Fishes of Ohio published in 2019. He has continued to work at The Ohio State University working on projects studying and reintroducing Ohio’s rare and endangered fish species to this day.
