Connecting Urban Educators and Youth to Local Watersheds Through Environmental Education

January 28, 2027 – New research from Ohio Sea Grant, Stone Lab, and the Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative

Urban youth and educators have limited opportunities to connect with local waterways and understand how their small watersheds are connected with larger socio-ecological systems. Dr. Marijke Hecht’s Ohio Sea Grant-funded research is helping address this challenge by bringing together in-school and out-of-school educators to expand environmental learning through place-based, outdoor experiences and Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs).

Through professional development, educator partnerships, and ongoing support, the project is supporting project participants as they create engaging, locally focused environmental learning opportunities that help youth connect with nearby Lake Erie. Join this Freshwater Science webinar to learn how this work is fostering environmental literacy, empowering stewardship, and helping develop informed citizens who can take action to improve their local environment.
