Freshwater Science: Meeting the Challenge of Emerging Contaminants with Granular Activated Carbon

March 31, 2027 – New research from Ohio Sea Grant, Stone Lab, and the Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative

With harmful algal toxins, PFAS, and microplastics posing growing challenges for Ohio water utilities, Dr. John Lenhart of The Ohio State University is evaluating how granular activated carbon (GAC) can simultaneously remove multiple contaminants from source waters. Learn how pilot-scale and rapid small-scale testing systems are generating data that can be scaled to full-sized treatment reactors at Greater Cincinnati Water Works. Hear the latest findings from this Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative project on cyanotoxin and PFAS removal, and gain insights into how this research could help utilities optimize treatment strategies to protect public health and water quality.
