The latest issue of Ohio Sea Grant's magazine includes stories on researchers who are keeping a watchful eye on the health of migrating birds in Lake Erie wetlands, Sea Grant educators taking Great Lakes education to the next level, and a first glimpse at the 2015 Stone Lab season.

RESEARCH

Algal Blooms in Sandusky Bay (PDF link)
A new research project at Bowling Green State University, funded by Ohio Sea Grant, is exploring how differences in nutrient loading between Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie can lead to different types of harmful algal blooms, and how to prevent or reduce the blooms when they happen.

EDUCATION

Environmental Education Goes Local (PDF link)
NOAA's B-WET education program promotes locally relevant learning through hands-on experiences. In the Great Lakes, B-WET is led by Pennsylvania Sea Grant in collaboration with Ohio Sea Grant, and combines teacher workshops with year-long support for classroom activities.

OUTREACH

National Panel to Review Ohio Sea Grant
The Ohio Sea Grant College Program at The Ohio State University, which includes Stone Laboratory, will host a federal Site Review Team next month. The team of national experts will consider program management, engagement, and impact, as well as public comments submitted by Nov. 11.

Lichtkoppler says goodbye

Ohio Sea Grant's Frank Lichtkoppler, the Lake County Extension agent and program leader, retired on September 30, after 33 years with Ohio Sea Grant and two prior years as an extension agent, for a total of 35 years of service.

Researchers from The Ohio State University are monitoring northern Ohio wetlands for influenza viruses, to help prepare state agencies and private landowners should migrating birds carry avian influenza into the area.
