Stone Lab’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Fellowship Program is a competitive comprehensive research internship that attracts students from across the country to learn how to conduct real, in-the-field research alongside top scientists. Over eight weeks, participants use scientific equipment, explore the Lake Erie islands, and collect important data to help solve the most pressing issues for the Great Lakes region. In 2024, the program runs from June 3 through July 26 and is open to students from any U.S. university, including international students.
Working closely with their research supervisor, REU students collect data, learn how to write about their discoveries and give a final presentation to their peers — learning the research process from start to finish and gaining valuable professional experience.
Students selected for the REU program receive a full fellowship to Stone Lab, including:
- Room and meals
- A $5,500 stipend
In 2024, students will study the following topics:
Fish Ecology
Exploration of the behavioral and physiological responses of Lake Erie fishes to human-induced environmental change
Mammalogy
Species diversity and distribution on the Bass Islands, Lake Erie
Limnology
Exploration of Lake Erie nutrient loading, hypoxic events (the “dead zone”) and harmful algal blooms
Previous students have attended local and regional conferences and co-authored scientific journal articles about their research.
Students applying for the REU program must submit:
- College transcripts (unofficial transcripts or advising reports are sufficient)
- Resume
- Cover letter (highlight previous background experiences and how the REU program will support your academic and professional career)
- Two completed recommendation forms go.osu.edu/stonelabreurec from non-relatives who can speak to your academic success and work ethic. Recommendation forms should include the author’s business email.
